Banned Buds Week: RIP Skywalker OG

Oregon puts kibosh on Girl Scout Cookies, Charlotte’s Web, 18 other strain names that they say “appeal to children” – but only the names. We’re highlighting these strains in a series we call Banned Buds Week.

My kid’s not allowed to watch “Star Wars.” It’s pretty violent and scary for a 3-year-old, and he’s at an age where his conflict resolution circuits are just forming, and nightmares easily wake him up at night. We’re all about the Octonauts.

So it’s pretty hilarious that identification card-carrying adults 21 and over won’t be able to buy the cannabis classic Skywalker OG by name in Oregon, or anything else associated with the iconic “Star Wars” universe, ostensibly because the franchise is being marketed to kids. No Starkiller, no Death Star, no Yoda OG — you get the idea.

It’s all the more ironic when you think about the people that made those movies — George Lucas’ buddies in Northern California, the geographic and cultural heartland of cannabis. You can bet those bearded prop guys and sound directors knew their way around 1970s ganja, and actress Carrie Fisher’s biography confirms it.

“[Fisher] started smoking marijuana at 13, stopping only when the drug turned nasty six years later, on the set of “Star Wars.” ‘It ultimately turned out to be [actor Harrison Ford’s] pot that did me in,’ she wrote.”

The character Jabba the Hut hits what looks like a bubbler in the third film “Return of the Jedi.”

And the films were certainly loved by the heads of their time, which is why gardeners began nick-naming their strains after the cherished films. In this case, Skywalker OG, combines the strain Skywalker (Blueberry X Mazar) and OG Kush.

Both Blueberry and Mazar are dense, fragrant indicas, which can lock patients to a couch, even as they blast off on a psychic journey of introspection.

Those indica genetics further anchor the blockbuster OG Kush’s own indica tendencies, making Skywalker OG great for chronic pain and insomnia — or a seven-film movie marathon. Its dense, resinous flower buds smell like a hashy mix of sweet lemon, pine and fuel, and flowers in eight to nine weeks.

Skywalker OG is a beloved member of some of the best top shelves of dispensaries nationwide, and it’ll continue to be one. Even if they rename it Jar Jar Binks.

Have you ever smoked Skywalker OG?
