D.C. State Fair Introduces “Best Buds” Competition

It’s true! For the first time ever, D.C. is hosting a new contest for local cannabis growers to show off their plants’ finest buds.

Lots people have fond childhood memories of attending a state fair and have held onto those fun-filled sights and sounds for many years. From the rides and games to the inimitable food and snacks, it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind experience that’s hard to replicate in any other setting. This year, though, the D.C. State Fair is taking its memory-making duties very seriously by adding a truly unforgettable event to the previous predictable fray: a cannabis competition.

Anna Tauzin, a board member and outreach director for the fair, thinks this is an excellent opportunity for residents to participate in the new cannabis regulations.“Now that it’s legal for residents of the District to grow their own plants, we wanted a way to highlight this new freedom while also showing off the agricultural talents of the District’s people,” she said in an email.

Although the judges will not be sampling any of the entries, event officials have created a different set of standards to judge the winning strain of the “Best Buds” competition. Entrants will be asked to enter 1 to 2 grams of cannabis and will have their buds judged on four components: appearance, odor, touch and the story behind the plant’s cultivation.

Entry forms are available online for any D.C. cultivators that are interested in joining in and will remain open until Sept. 5. Check out the fair’s website to learn more about the competition.

The D.C. State Fair will take place on Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Old City Farm and Guild.
