Dispensaries Offer Low-Dose Options for New Consumers

Since the legalization of cannabis in Colorado and Washington state, there have been numerous reports of newbies getting a little too high from eating pot-infused edibles. Although there has been an ongoing conversation surrounding the safety of the dosage amounts in cannabis products that can be eaten, it’s clear that consumers are looking to manufacturers to make the changes that will help them have better experiences.

According to reports, a market study released over the summer suggested that 40 percent of customers that frequent recreational dispensaries in the Denver area are actually tourists — not residents. With this in mind, manufacturers have made the choice to offer cannabis treats with lower potency an attempt to reach out to curious or novice marijuana consumers with little to no knowledge or personal experience eating pot.

New products are beginning to hit the shelves already with the introduction of the “Rookie Cookie,” and reduced dosage, infused sodas. Holden Sproul of the Growing Kitchen, which makes the “Rookie Cookie,” has decided to take the business in a new direction by slowly eliminating strong, high-dose products from the line.

“For a long time, the medical market was a race to the strongest edibles. Now it’s a new market, and people want something that won’t get them so inebriated they’re not functional,” he said.

Tim Cullen, owner of two Denver-area marijuana dispensaries, understands the need for lower-dosage treats, making a comparison to the differing levels of potency in alcohol.

“No one buys a handle of Jim Beam and thinks they should drink all of that in one sitting,” he said. “But people do want to eat an entire cookie, an entire piece of chocolate. So these products allow you to do that and not have a miserable experience.”

This intentional move to include every level of pot consumers is a smart and strategic marketing move for the ever-evolving industry of cannabis. Many attempts have been made to reduce negative press and remove the mystique around the consumption of cannabis-infused products. As lower-dosage products becoming a standard in retail locations, people will be able to begin understand how to regulate their cannabis intake in a way that doesn’t exclude them from trying out edibles.

Everyone wants to have their cake and eat it, too. With low-potency items available, it will be safer to do so without risking an unsavory episode that might ruin the whole experience.
