Your Average Annual Spending on Cannabis, Revealed

Rent, groceries, student loans — and with what’s left over, about $647 on cannabis, strictly flower.

The identity of the “average” legal marijuana consumer is a 37-year-old man who “buys traditional marijuana buds” about every three weeks, according to a recent survey of cannabis purchases in Washington state.

Seattle-based “cannabis intelligence firm” Headset, Inc. crunched data from 40,000 purchases in the Evergreen State, made between Sept. 2014 and July 2016 in order to get a handle on who’s buying what — and how much.

And even though the average consumer age is 37 — and most buys are made by men — it was millennials who are keeping the industry afloat.

Half of recreational cannabis consumers are between 21 and 34, the survey found, with the Flower Power generation the least likely to stop in at the local dispensary. Less than 10 percent of consumers were over 60, according to the survey.

What are people buying, exactly? According to the survey, it doesn’t matter how old you are or how much you spend — flower is king. Bud was the most popular purchase, followed by pre-rolls, vape pens, and then edibles, according to results of the survey published in the Chicago Tribune.

That would make concentrates the least-popular purchase. Sorry, 710 nation.

There’s a bit more granular detail to sift through. Consumers in their 20s spent about $27 per visit, and visited every 16 days. That’s about an eighth a month — or a gram of concentrate.

But for some THC-seekers, the older you get, the more you have to spend on your favorite strains. The spendiest generation is Generation X, with users in their forties spending an annual average of $823, well above the mean. Users in their 50s — as in the parents of millennials — spent $753 per year. Guess having that stable job counts for something.

How much do you think you spend on marijuana per year?
